Central Florida’s hospitals urgently need life-saving blood donations with the supply of O-negative blood type at critically low levels.
O-negative blood is the universal blood type, which means that any patient can receive O-negative blood regardless of the recipient’s blood type. O-negative blood is critical for trauma patients, premature babies and emergency surgeries. Other blood types – A, B and AB – also are needed.
Please help City of Leesburg police officers and firefighters in helping Oneblood – formerly Florida’s Blood Centers – to meet this very important need in our community.
The two departments will compete for blood donations at the 2013 Battle of Badges from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Towne Square next to Leesburg City Hall between north 5th and 6th streets. Two blood donation buses will be parked on opposite sides of the square – just choose which department to support and make a contribution. Donating blood is easy, and the actual procedure takes less than 30 minutes. The department that collects the most blood donations will win, but the real winners are local medical patients who depend on emergency blood supplies.
Each donor will receive a T-shirt and a coupon for a free sandwich at the Chick-fil-A restaurant, 730 N. U.S. Highway 27/441 in Lady Lake. Donate on ALYX during this event and receive an extra $10 gift card by mail for Darden Restaurants including Red Lobster, Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze and others.
Get your picture taken at 5:30 p.m. with the Chick-fil-A cows, which will be dressed up in police and firefighting costumes for this special event. Free hot dogs and other surprises also are planned.
Photo identification is required. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds or more. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids prior to donation.
A single blood donation can help to save the lives of up to three people. Most donations are supplied to local hospitals and medical facilities within two to three days. Some blood also can assist rescue efforts from natural disasters and other emergencies around the country.
