The purpose of this position is to verify meter information on all water meters within the service area and perform routine manual work. Under general supervision, performs outdoor work involving the reading and recording of city utility meters. Duties include completing logs or routine records on a daily basis, excessive walking, bending and driving in inclement weather conditions. Although the employee works independently and is often physically removed from supervision, duties are performed within the framework of pre-established policies and procedures. The expected timeframe to have work completed is 18 months. Once work is completed, this position will be moved into the Water Distribution Apprenticeship program and must meet the minimum requirements of that position at that time. Requires a high school diploma or GED. Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Duties are performed under training and close supervision until proficiency is demonstrated. Any combination of experience, training, and education which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job will be considered. General knowledge of city streets is preferred. Must be able to read and write English. Requires basic computer skills. Performs clerical and manual tasks prescribed by standard practices, which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgment with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results. Ability to work well with others. Willing to learn and apply good customer service procedures. The ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements, walk long distances, to kneel and bend over to verify meter information.
