The purpose of the class is to perform skilled welding duties and lead others in constructing, installing, and maintaining natural gas facilities. The class is responsible for leading others, planning, supplies and materials, operating various types of general and special purpose equipment, inspecting work, minor equipment maintenance, training, and minor administrative tasks. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. Requires a high school diploma or GED and formal training, special courses, or self-education equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in a construction or technical trade or a closely related field. One year of certified natural gas pipeline welding and related design and installation of gas distribution systems preferred. Must have general knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques of gas distribution system design; general knowledge of Gas Laws and Safety Codes; thorough knowledge of material and methods used in construction of gas systems. Preferred one year of certified natural gas pipeline welding and related design and installation of gas distribution systems. Must demonstrate basic skills in arc and acetylene welding on steel pipe by the date of employment. Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors and senior management. Must be able to work outside in extreme environmental condition such as cold, heat, rain, and wind. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are preferred. Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL permit by date of hire and obtain Class A CDL within 90 days of employment. Must obtain required Operator Qualifications certifications within 120 days of employment, required NIMS certifications according to class availability and maintain certifications according to department guidelines. Must obtain Gas department certification for horizontal and vertical 3/4” Poly butt fuse and 2” acetylene and 2” and 8” arc welding within first 90 days of employment. Must recertify annually according to PSC guidelines. Must be able to obtain and maintain city required forklift certification and maintain throughout employment. Special skills or equipment certification may be required. This position requires participation in Gas Department random drug testing program. In addition, is subject to Federal Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations. Must live within 20 mile radius of the city limits of Leesburg, or move within this 20 mile radius within first 9 (nine) months of employment and continued employment. Must participate in on call rotation. Must be available for call back for gas emergencies.
